How did you (Brian) get into racing?
A friend of mine whom I played golf and hockey with, Janis Zichmanis, bought a Formula Vee. I didn't know anything about racing at that time but, I had always loved driving cars. He asked me to go out to Harewood with him and work on it for him - I was working as a mechanic at the time at Forli Motors in Toronto. So I did that and then the Deutscher Automobil Club, which is one of the clubs in the Ontario region - they used to have a race just for mechanics and the mechanics would get to drive the car that they worked on. I drove Zichmanis' car, and I didn't just win the race…my time was equal to that of the "national drivers" - the Wayne Kellys and the Brian Robertson's of the day - the "top guns" in the national classes. And here I was, I had never driven a racecar before and I was as fast as they were. Zichmanis and I are still extremely friendly to this day, but he just looked at me that day and he walked away. He never sat in that racecar again. He said, "Hey, this is your sport," and so I drove that car for the rest of the season. And then the next year, I got my own car and I won, and I've been winning ever since.
What is your (Brian) most memorable moment in racing?
My most memorable moment was at Indianapolis in 2006 when Wade Cunningham won at the Freedom 100 and I was in the Winner Circle at Indy. I felt like I had waited my whole life for that moment - my destiny.
What's the difference between an Indy car and a Firestone Indy Lights car?
The main difference is in the horsepower of the engine - 750 for an Indy car and 450 for an Indy Lights car.
How can I join the BSR team?
One of the things that keeps the Brian Stewart Racing team at the front of the pack is a delicate balance between long-time team members and a regular influx of new blood and talent.
